Great coffee shops typically offer custom-made coffee drinks to answer a growing customer demand and elevate their game.
Signature coffee drinks are delightful, usually sweet, and trendy. Let’s have some fun and copycat some signature coffee drinks!

What is a signature coffee drink?

A signature coffee drink is a unique coffee beverage served only in a particular coffee shop. Baristas of the coffee shop can develop a creative coffee drink as their signature. Note that it can contain alcohol too. It’s an unusual or unique combination of ingredients put together for us to savor.

Signature drinks dedicated to a season are called seasonal drinks.

Increased popularity of these signature coffee drinks

Pouring milk for making a signature coffee drink

At first, the specialty coffee industry was cold at the idea of adding anything to their precious coffee. High-quality coffee is excellent, but many people demand unique, sweet hot, or cold beverages. Like it or not, you can deny yourself adding high-quality ingredients to a high-quality coffee will give you a fantastic beverage experience. It’s like crafting cocktails, using top-quality spirits, and you will end up with a burst and genuinely unique experience.

Moreover, we see the increased popularity of barista competitions like the United States Barista Championship or the World Barista Championship (WBC). Those competitions promote excellence in coffee and ask baristas to prepare original signature drinks as part of the evaluation.

So no surprise that many coffee shops added those delicious specialty coffee drinks to their menus in recent years. How bland would it be if every coffee shop you visited served the same beverages?

Benefits of having a signature coffee drink for coffee shops:

  • Attract new customers
  • Stand out from other competitive coffee shops
  • Incorporate personality, culture, exotic ingredients, etc.
  • Money, the price of those signature coffee drinks are high, so they add value and income to the coffee shops.

Let’s copycat some signature coffee drinks

Once in a while, treat yourself to one of those delicious signature coffee drinks.

#1. Kopi Sanger, a sweet hot coffee treat

Sweet, creamy, the Kopi Sanger is a delicious Indonesian treat. The way you prepare it enhances the flavors and the smoothness of the coffee.
Kopi Sanger is made with condensed milk and coffee (espresso + hot water or a strong coffee prepared with a French Press or an AeroPress), filtered through a sieve repeatedly to achieve a smooth texture.

Ingredients:

  • 4 ½ fl oz Strong black coffee
  • 1 fl oz Sweetened condensed milk

Equipment:

Instructions:

  1. Make 4 1/2 oz of fresh black coffee with a French press or an AeroPress. You can also make an Americano. Those methods make a more robust coffee. Pour into a measuring cup or a pouring pot.
  2. Add 1 oz of condensed milk, and stir.
  3. Pour the condensed milk/coffee mixture into the second pitcher, strain with a small sieve. The condensed milk will come at the end; when it stops flowing, repeat the pouring into the first pitcher with the sieve. Repeat until the condensed milk is thoroughly mixed. Repeat at least three times.
  4. Serve into your prewarmed cup and enjoy!

#3. Vietnamese style Iced Coffee

Sweet, fresh, and creamy, the Vietnamese iced coffee is a real treat. Sweet but not cloying, it can be served hot or cold, but it works very well as a cold drink.

This recipe is adapted from the Vietnamese recipe. The actual Vietnamese coffee is prepared with a particular brewer called a phin. I adapted the receipt to use the AeroPress to brew the coffee over the condensed milk. The AeroPress is used like a pour-over, without the press.

Ingredients:

  • 12 g Finely ground coffee (medium roast, ideally)
  • 180 g Hot water (at about 200 degrees C)
  • ½ oz Sweetened condensed milk
  • Ice

Equipment:

Instructions:

  1. Pour the condensed milk into your glass,
  2. Wet the AeroPress filter with hot water, screw the filter holder in place,
  3. Pour your fresh ground coffee in the AeroPress. Swirl the brewer to even the grounds, and put it on the glass,
  4. Tare your scale and slowly pour 30g of hot water on the coffee to saturate the grounds. Gently swirl the brewer and let it bloom for 20-30 seconds,
  5. Slowly and evenly pour the water until you hit 180g,
  6. Let the coffee drip on the condensed milk; it will take several minutes,
  7. Once the coffee stops dripping, remove the AeroPress,
  8. Stir the coffee and the condensed milk,
  9. Pour the coffee into a large glass filled with ice cubes. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¼ fl oz Espresso coffee
  • 3 oz Vanilla ice cream
  • 2 Biscoff cookies, crushed
  • 1 dash Amaretto liqueur

Garnish (optional):

  • Whipped cream
  • Biscoff cookies crumbles or grated dark chocolate

Equipment:

  • A blender
  • A double-wall glass or a regular glass

Instructions:

  1. Pull your espresso shot,
  2. Put the ice cream, the cookies, the Amaretto, and the espresso shot in the cup of an immersion blender or in a regular blender,
  3. Blend until completely smooth, about 30 sec,
  4. Pour into your favorite glass. Enjoy this sweet treat!

Note: You can substitute the espresso shot with a strong black coffee brewed with an Aeropress or a Moka pot.
